Women seeking fertility and when in labor traditionally chant Psalm 20. And yet, on its own terms the Psalm is a prayer for a royal leader, for King David. The words of the petitioner raise questions: Who is speaking? Who is the “we”? What is the nature of the aid sought? Artfully written, the closing line could either be read as a request for deliverance by the Divine or the mortal King.
