Following the ancient tradition of the biblical prophets, Israeli writers have taken upon themselves the role of whistle blowers. As they are part of the state coming into its own, they do not shy away from telling the public as well as the leadership off. They fearlessly address social injustice, war ethics and poverty. We will start with the early days of the State through Nathan Alterman’s The Seventh Column poems, proceeding all the way to contemporary poems by Moise ben Harush and Eliraz Cohen addressing the ongoing Mizrachi – Ashkenazi dialogue and issues of settlements across the Green Line.
