Since Israel’s establishment, the complex nature of Judaism is a central component of life. The interaction of politics, power, and theology, as well as the central role of the Chief Rabbinate, results in an ongoing battle in the Knesset and the Supreme Court which deal with issues complicated both by centuries of living in the Diaspora and also the intensity of being in the Holy Land.
